About this experience
There is another China just beyond the city: vegetables growing in the fields, lunch shaped by the season, and time to sit in a courtyard without needing to move on to the next sight.
Spend a slow day on a working family farm south of Chengdu. This is a chance to meet the people who live here and understand a little of their everyday life — through the land they work, the food they prepare and the conversations that happen along the way.
Begin with a walk through the fields. What you see depends on the time of year: a crop coming into season, vegetables almost ready for the kitchen, or the quieter work between harvests. Ask how things are grown and how the farm’s produce finds its way into Sichuan home cooking.
If you would like to join in, try a little of the work happening that day. That might mean picking vegetables, gathering herbs, washing produce or another light task chosen by the farm family. You can take part at your own pace, or simply watch and talk. The activity follows the farm’s routine rather than a fixed performance schedule.
Then move towards the kitchen. Help prepare a countryside-style meal with seasonal ingredients, learn a few of the family’s cooking habits and sit down to eat together. The dishes are agreed around what is available and practical; a specific crop, recipe or harvest is not guaranteed every day.
After lunch, leave time for the courtyard. Have some tea, listen to a story or ask the questions you have not had a chance to ask in the city. The point is not to fit more into the day. It is to get closer to what an ordinary rural day can feel like.
Qian Qian is a working farmer, a writer with a published book, and a traveller who has visited many countries. With around 200,000 followers across social platforms, Qian Qian shares a life that connects the wider world with the everyday realities of a Chinese farm.
Here, the conversation can move from the vegetables in front of you to writing, travel and life in the countryside. Host availability and any language-support arrangements must be confirmed before booking.
Tell us about your interests, dietary needs and how active you would like to be. Families can discuss a gentler pace; curious cooks can ask for more time around the kitchen; others may prefer conversation and a quiet walk.
Farm tasks are optional. The route, crops and hands-on activities depend on the season, weather and the work taking place. The core of the day stays the same: a working farm, seasonal food and time with the people who live here.
