Mother-of-Pearl Inlay Craft Experience — Create Your Own Traditional Chinese Ornament

Mother-of-pearl inlay, known in Chinese as 螺钿 (luó diàn), is a traditional decorative craft that dates back over a thousand years in China.

It was widely used on lacquerware, furniture, musical instruments, and ceremonial objects in ancient dynasties. The technique involves cutting, grinding, and embedding thin pieces of shell into a surface, creating shimmering patterns that change with light and angle.

Unlike painting, where color is applied, mother-of-pearl inlay works with natural light reflection — meaning every piece is slightly different, and no two finished works are ever identical.

This workshop lets you experience this slow, detail-oriented craft in a simplified and accessible way, while still preserving its core logic: patience, precision, and material sensitivity.

Experience Flow

1️⃣ Choose Your Base & Design (5 min)

Begin by selecting your preferred base shape and mother-of-pearl colors.

You can explore different combinations and decide how you want your final piece to look.

2️⃣ Grinding the Shell Pieces (20 min)

Next, you will carefully grind the mother-of-pearl pieces into smaller, workable fragments.

This step helps you understand how traditional inlay materials are prepared before being placed into artwork.

Cardboard sheet

3️⃣ Inlay & Placement (50 min)

This is the core creative stage.

Using a brush and adhesive, you will gradually place each shell fragment onto the surface of your chosen base, forming your own pattern.

The process is slow and mindful, focusing on patience and detail rather than perfection.

4️⃣ Sealing & Finishing (10 min)

Once your design is complete, the instructor will help refine and adjust the surface before applying a protective sealing layer.

This ensures durability and a smooth final finish.

5️⃣ Drying Process (5 min)

Your finished piece is placed under a drying lamp to set the surface and complete the crafting process.

After this step, your handmade ornament is ready to take home.
