About this experience
The story
behind the route.
Only about thirty minutes south of central Chengdu, the pace of the city begins to loosen.
High-rise buildings slowly give way to narrow village roads, bamboo groves, vegetable fields, fish ponds, and small family farms that still follow the rhythm of Sichuan’s seasons.
This experience takes place at the home of a real local farm family — not a commercial tourist farm, but a place where people still grow food, cook from the land, and spend long afternoons outdoors.
Walking through a Sichuan farm
After arriving, your host will take you slowly through the surrounding fields and introduce what is currently growing depending on the season.
Unlike large industrial farms, these are small plots connected closely to local Chengdu cooking and everyday meals.
Depending on the time of year, you may see:
fresh erjingtiao chili peppers drying in the sun
Sichuan pepper plants
celtuce (wosun) growing in rows
leafy greens used in hotpot and home cooking
broad beans, garlic shoots, or seasonal herbs
lotus roots and small water fields nearby
You may also notice ingredients that often appear on Sichuan tables but are unfamiliar outside China.
Your host may casually explain:
what locals cook with these ingredients
how Sichuan flavor changes by season
why Chengdu people care so much about freshness and texture
The conversations are relaxed and happen naturally while walking.
Light hands-on farm activities
Depending on the season and what the family is doing that day, guests may join simple farm tasks such as:
picking vegetables
harvesting herbs
washing freshly picked produce
feeding chickens or ducks
preparing ingredients for cooking
Nothing is performed specifically for tourists — the experience follows the normal rhythm of countryside life.
Cooking and eating like a local family
Back at the farmhouse kitchen, everyone helps prepare a simple Sichuan-style countryside meal together.
The dishes depend on the season and available ingredients, but often focus on fresh vegetables, homemade flavors, and recipes commonly cooked in local homes rather than restaurants.
Guests are welcome to participate in:
preparing vegetables
wrapping dumplings
helping with simple stir-fry dishes
learning how local ingredients are used in everyday cooking
Once everything is ready, the family gathers around the table to eat together slowly.
A quieter side of Chengdu
After the meal, time slows down naturally.
Tea may be served outside in the courtyard while people talk, rest, or simply enjoy the quieter countryside atmosphere that exists just beyond the city.
This part of Chengdu is not about sightseeing — it is about rhythm, weather, food, and the way daily life still quietly connects to the land.
