About this experience

The story
behind the route.

Tie-dye, known in China as 扎染 (zā rǎn), is a traditional textile craft with roots dating back over a thousand years, especially in regions like Yunnan and Sichuan.

Unlike modern printing, tie-dye is created through a process of folding, binding, and dyeing fabric by hand. The patterns are never fully predictable — each piece is shaped by pressure, timing, and chance, making every result unique.

Historically, this craft was used in everyday clothing and household textiles. Today, it is often seen as a living example of how traditional techniques adapt into contemporary creative culture.

This experience offers a simplified, hands-on introduction to the craft — focusing on process, creativity, and personal expression rather than technical perfection.

What You Will Do

1️⃣ Choose Your Fabric & Pattern (10 min)

Select your base item (such as a scarf, tote bag, or cloth piece) and explore different folding and binding styles.

You can follow classic patterns or create your own abstract design.

2️⃣ Folding & Binding (20 min)

Using simple techniques like twisting, folding, or tying, you prepare the fabric for dyeing.

This step determines how the final pattern will appear.

3️⃣ Dyeing Process (30 min)

You apply natural or fabric dyes to your prepared cloth.

Colors slowly spread into the fabric, creating layered, organic patterns.

This is the most visually engaging part of the experience.

4️⃣ Rinsing & Reveal (20 min)

After setting, you rinse the fabric and slowly reveal the final pattern.

The result is always slightly unexpected, which is part of the craft’s charm.

5️⃣ Drying & Take Home (10 min)

Your finished piece is dried and prepared for you to take home as a wearable souvenir.
